The Nation’s First Commercial Hybrid Clams

The Nation’s First Commercial Hybrid Clams

Dr. Tawainga Katsvairo presented at the Aquaculture America 2023 NOAA-funded project to commercially produce the nation’s first hybrid clams. The project is being conducted by Arc Horizon client, Southeastern Seaproduct, a large clam and oyster producer and wholesaler in Cedar Key, Florida.

The hybrid clams have numerous improved qualities. They can better survive the prolonged hot summer months in the Gulf of Mexico, which result in mortalities of up to 50%. The hybrid clams will enable the creation of new market opportunities previously unavailable to US producers. We anticipate the creation and realization of additional revenue estimated in millions based on the hybrid clams for growers in the Gulf of Mexico. The new hybrid clams will create jobs and revitalize coastal fishing towns, simultaneously strengthening the economy and assisting in closing our national seafood trade deficit.
